Romania: Facts & Stats

DEMOGRAPHICS | Economy | Transportation | Culture

Demographics

Population:

Population: 22,215,421 inhabitants (July 2009)
Density: 90 inhabitants per sq. Km

The five largest cities are:
  1. Bucharest 1977200
  2. Galati 342400
  3. Timisoara 340000
  4. Constanta 337800

Welfare:

Health care is generally poor by European standards, and access is limited in certain rural areas. In 2001 health expenditures were equal to 6.5 percent of gross domestic product. In 2005 there were 1.9 physicians and 7.4 hospital beds per 1,000 people. The system has been funded by the National Health Care Insurance Fund, to which employers and employees make mandatory contributions.

Private health insurance has developed slowly. Because of low public funding, about 36 percent of the population’s health care spending is out-of-pocket. Bribes frequently are paid to gain improved treatment.

Education:

According to the Law on Education adopted in 1995, the Romanian Educational System is regulated by the Ministry of Education and Research. Each level has its own form of organization and is subject to different legislation.

Kindergarten is optional between 3 and 6 years old. Schooling starts at age 7 (sometimes 6), and is compulsory until the 10th grade (which usually corresponds to the age of 17 or 16). Primary and secondary educations are divided in 12 or 13 grades. Higher education is aligned onto the European higher education area.

Since the Romanian Revolution of 1989, the Romanian education system has been in a continuous process of reformation that has been both praised and criticized.

Religion:

The great majority of Romanians (86.8% in the 1992 census) are affiliated with the Romanian Orthodox Church, one of the autocephalous Eastern Orthodox churches. The government recognizes 15 religions. Catholic denominations include Roman and Greek. Greatly weakened under earlier Communist pressure, Roman Catholics had no official connection with Rome since 1948, when the Communist regime unilaterally annulled the concordat with the Vatican. In 1990, relations with the Vatican were restored.

Protestant denominations include the Reformed (Calvinist) Church of Romania, the German-minority Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession, the Unitarian Church (mostly Hungarian), Baptists, Seventh-Day Adventists, Pentecostals, Methodists, and Presbyterians. According to the 1992 census, about 55,928 people were Muslim and 9,670 were Jewish. There are also small communities of Baha'is, God's Children (of the Family), Hare Krishnas, Zen Buddhists, and Mormons (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints).
